Asthma

The symptoms of asthma include:

Wheezing
Difficulty in breathing
Chest tightness, pain, or pressure
Coughing (especially at night)

The exact cause of asthma is unknown, but it can be triggered by various factors, including pollen, dust or other allergens. It could also be triggered by cold weather or physical exercise.

In TCM, we believe that asthma can be generally categorized as either "excessive" or "deficient".

Excessive-type asthma shows the following symptoms:

Clear or yellow phlegm
Heavy breathing
Fever or headache
Anxiety
Chest tightness
Dry mouth
Greasy tongue

Deficient-type asthma shows the following symptoms:

Shortness of breath
Loss of voice
Coughing
Excessive sweating
Light-colored tongue
Cold limbs

Treatment: Acupuncture and herbs can soothe and nourish the lung and kidney meridian and eventually halt the major symptoms of asthma. In some cases, phlegm needs to be eliminated by other means.
